New reply from Susan Katz

Thank you so much for submitting your poem for consideration for Featured Poem of the Month for December. I very much like the way the mood builds in your poem and how you create a sense of "darkness" that takes us on a dramatic journey. I also think you did a great job with your ending stanza – the "slant" rhyme at the end, works really well. Good job.

Your friend in poetry,

Darkness

I lit a candle in the unending void,

It's glow searing the cold darkness;

Eyes wide, lips curled into a smile,

After long had I been this overjoyed.

Came a squall of wind and sand,

And the flame began to falter;

Worry creeping upon my face,

I shielded the blaze with my hand.

Rumbled and roared the mighty gust,

I tried my best to shelter the light;

But destiny sought something loathsome,

As the flame died of fate unjust.

Fear of the imminent growing larger,

I foolishly hoped for the impossible;

The darkness did return inevitably,

Only this time it appeared darker.
