Sometimes we get caught up in the darkness of the moment forgetting that the sun is shining somewhere. We focus on that which is painful, forgetting that joy finds its way home no matter how long the journey. The truth is, I have been wallowing in a muddy puddle of sadness, frustration, anger and fear. I have forgotten that the way to joy is through sorrow – that one is as essential in our lives as the other.
My son, recently, suggested that it would be good for me and perhaps, a relief for my readers, if I were to focus less on the troubles of the world and more on the simple things that make us smile, remind us that life is a fleeting gift that should not be wasted.
And so, today, I offer you a “happy poem.” I offer you a poem that reminds me (and I hope you, as well) that in the darkest night, the stars shine their brightest…
A HAPPY POEM
To David
It’s hard to write
a happy poem find light
in darkness
that devours everything
yet warm
the merciful
embrace of sun that
loved you
through soft summer
sweetened hours
starlight that dared
you to anticipate
notions utterly
unthinkable and
yet……if only
you allow yourself
the comfort of believing
you may conceive
them melting
in your mind
soft breezes
on this August day
float about me
teaching leaves
on heavy branches
how to rustle
how to sway
together
merging into infinite
romance……so hard and yet
so easy to recall the timeless
moments when love
teased
the breath you held
within you like a prayer
inviting you to dare again
believe in dreams
dismissing wretched
shadows
hiding contriving
to entice you past
the places where your heart
belongs
hearing once again
the songs of voices
you haven’t heard in years
remembered now in joy
not tears……we like soil
absorb the rain
call it pain yet raindrops
touch the earth
as kisses
this I know
weaving words
into a happy poem
dismisses sadness
tempts the
fertile seeds within
to seek the sun
and grow…
