Welcome to my Poet Lady Chat Room. I would like to invite you to click on the chat box and type in a question, a suggestion, submit a poem, in other words – “chat with me.” I may, if you submit a poem, decide to feature it in my Poem of the Week section or, we may simply exchange ideas and suggestions about your poem.

This is a place to “talk” poetry with someone who has loved it all her life. I have a true passion for the possibilities of poetry and would love to hear your thoughts and/or read your poem. I will be happy to offer my reaction to your work and, based on over 40 years of teaching poetry, organizing, and conducting poetry workshops, working as a book review editor for an international poetry magazine, authoring five books of poetry and two textbooks on teaching poetry, send along my thoughts on ways to make your poem stronger and more impactful.

If you’re on my site, you have a connection to poetry. Feel free to connect with me – right here -right now, by typing your message into the “chat box” and clicking send. I’m waiting…

My stomach is soft and I am ok

I hug my warm body

And let my inner child know that she is not alone

I remind her that I am safe

My demons despise me

They hate the fact that I’m living

Because I never felt worthy of love

Or anything that didn’t make me skinny

I remember looking through the window

With tears in my eyes

I wiped them away

As I realized that I don’t deserve to die

I’ve had anticipation for this day

Ever since I could remember

I have wanted to find that little girl

And I am finally able to get her

It does get easier, my darling

Your wounds will soon heal

You are worthy of seeing

The bright future that lies ahead of your being

Thank you for sharing this remarkably emotionally intense and personal poem.  You have taken us on a journey into your heart, as well as your mind.  I was very moved.  The one thing I might suggest, is that your poem, to truly capture the essence of poetry, could use some imagery.  Instead of telling us everything you want us to know, show us - make us feel - be part of the experience, through imagery.  Example: "

I’ve had anticipation for this day

Ever since I could remember

"I have waited on the edge of hope / trembling in the storm

of despair for a torrent of days

that lie heaped in memory.

This is just an "off the top of my head" example and I'm sure you can do much better.  What poets need to do is incorporate the five senses, and emotion, into their poems - make us see, hear, taste, touch, and smell your thoughts, your hopes, your fears, your desires and, in your case, your ultimate victory.  Do keep on writing - do keep on using poetry as a way to speak your truth - and thank you, so very much, for sharing with me.  I am grateful to have had the chance to "get to know you" through your poem.  Your friend in poetry, Susan
