Welcome to my Poet Lady Chat Room. I would like to invite you to click on the chat box and type in a question, a suggestion, submit a poem, in other words – “chat with me.” I may, if you submit a poem, decide to feature it in my Poem of the Week section or, we may simply exchange ideas and suggestions about your poem.

This is a place to “talk” poetry with someone who has loved it all her life. I have a true passion for the possibilities of poetry and would love to hear your thoughts and/or read your poem. I will be happy to offer my reaction to your work and, based on over 40 years of teaching poetry, organizing, and conducting poetry workshops, working as a book review editor for an international poetry magazine, authoring five books of poetry and two textbooks on teaching poetry, send along my thoughts on ways to make your poem stronger and more impactful.

If you’re on my site, you have a connection to poetry. Feel free to connect with me – right here -right now, by typing your message into the “chat box” and clicking send. I’m waiting…

Words are not just words for me (1 reply)

Some 'words' are not just 'words' for me,

they are clusters of passing emotions

igniting the spark within.

It's not just love;

They are those unspoken untamed thoughts,

Whirling into the deep wilderness inside of me,

Who do justice to that electricity,

running at the back of my mind.

It's me in intangible threads-

In a hope to find the missing piece,

to wire together.

They are like thunder

waking me into this life,

forcing no more fake enthusiasm and spirit.

They just let me be- Me.

Comforting me through the hurricane

Softening my vulnerability.

Making enough space to allow my chaos to bleed,

They create vacuum just for my heart

to cry in silence.

Those words don't label me under 'expectations',

they bare it all and love it all.

They allow the circus lion from the depth of my soul,

chase the deers in the dense forest and hunt them down.

They let me mourn, groan and be immature again,

and confide the darkest shade of me,

promising to not disclose it to others.

They see the truth with their blind eyes,

Complementing every part of my nakedness.

If I'm an apple pie,

They are the sugary apples,

in the batter of my clinging thoughts.

We gravitate towards each other,

You give me space and

I turn it into a galaxy,

with my wishes fulfilled by every falling comets,

Escaping the black holes allowing me to free fall.

Perhaps they like it like that-

making me drink the champagne

And then throwing it up all clumsily.

That's all, I play the gamble game with them,

betting how far we go and breaking records everytime.

It's not just love, its more than that

And less than nothing.

A match made in heaven for

'Words' are not just 'words' for me.

Thank you for submitting this powerfully conceived, passionately written poem about your relationship with "words."  As a poet and author, I understand the role words/word combinations play in our lives and you have captured that beautifully with a variety of strong, compelling images.  I do think you should go back over your poem, very carefully, and tighten some of your images.  For example, "Threads" would not be "wired" together - they would be "knit" together or "woven" together.  These are small adjustments that would, I think, elevate your poem.  I will definitely be considering it for Featured Poem of the Week.  Good job - well written - and passionate, in the way poetry must be, to be poetry.  Your friend in poetry, Susan
