THE ACHE TO DREAM

We dream in winter
summer skies amber
and imperious     a rioting
of violets between
slumberous stones       berries
ripening on thorny vines

     in summer     we lace
our nights with pewter skies
meadows bleached a laundered white
fires blazing orange on a grey
stone hearth

     in fall’s hardening we call
to spring and robins
and soft buds and Monarch’s wings.

We ache to dream
to bind the seasons
to us by a slender thread

     the seasons coming on
with whispered promises
unspoken lies

     the seasons bending
at their birth like us
to die.
